Assetto Motorsport lodges car order for new Clio Cup UK championship

Title winning squad Assetto Motorsport has confirmed it will enter the all new Clio Cup UK championship in 2020 after ordering two cars for the category.

The team is run by double Renault one-make champion Jim Edwards with his son-in-law Simon Traves and Jim's daughter, recent Clio Cup racer Jade Edwards, also involved.

In 2019, Assetto won the Ginetta G40 Cup which appears alongside the British GT Championship.

New Clio Cup UK has confirmed a seven-event calendar for its inaugural season in 2020 – five of those will be alongside the British GT Championship at circuits that include both the full length Silverstone GP and Brands Hatch GP configurations.

The other two events will take teams and drivers overseas; to Magny-Cours in France and then Spain’s Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix circuit where they will compete against their French and Spanish Clio Cup counterparts in an international season finale (CLICK HERE for more details).

The championship will use Renault Sport Racing’s latest fifth generation Clio Cup race car that has gone on sale priced £32,750.00* + vat.

“We’ve seen the car – it’s a great piece of kit as you’d expect from Renault Sport Racing and the price is astonishing for what you are getting,” commented Jim.

“Then there’s the registration per driver – just over £8,000 for all seven events which includes two current F1 circuits and the racing overseas.

“The championship fits very well with Assetto Motorsport’s plans as it works for new, young drivers looking to get going in cars and also those looking to race purely for fun.

“They are going to get experience of UK and European circuits in a fun environment without the big pressure. It’s a really nice way to go racing...

“I started out young and am a bit older and wiser now, but I have to say this car and championship would have been ideal at any point in my racing career.”

The new Clio Cup UK race car is powered by a 1.3 turbocharged engine producing 180bhp. Torque is put at 300Nm. Transmission is via a five-speed Sadev sequential (push-pull) gearbox.

Power Maxed Racing planning entry in new Clio Cup UK championship

Race winning British Touring Car squad Power Maxed Racing (PMR) has confirmed it plans to enter the new Clio Cup UK championship as part of its racing activity in 2020.

Team Manager Martin Broadhurst says PMR is keen to hear from potential drivers. The team is initially looking to run two cars.

Martin commented: “Renault’s Clio Cup championships in the UK have always been prestigious – we’ve regularly had one eye on them and this new championship is the opportunity we’ve been looking for.

“We’ve seen the car and what the championship offers in terms of value for money and driver progression – it’s cost-effective and ticks all the right boxes.

“It would be a natural progression for PMR to campaign cars, especially for drivers ultimately looking to enter BTCC with a front running team. We’ve always been big supporters of bringing talent to the forefront, and in four years have had two drivers win the coveted BTCC Jack Sears Trophy for Best Rookie."

Clio Cup UK, supported by Renault Sport Racing, has already confirmed a seven-event calendar for its inaugural season in 2020.

It will appear five times at UK circuits alongside the British GT Championship, but also race at two more events overseas – Magny-Cours, France and Barcelona-Catalunya, Spain.

At Barcelona, the UK’s teams and drivers will join their Clio Cup France and Spain counterparts to form a truly international season finale – some 60 cars could potentially start.

All three championships – including Clio Cup UK – will use the latest fifth generation Clio Cup race car which can now be ordered for £32,750.00 + vat (based on current £/€ exchange rates).

A full season’s registration is just £8,050.00 + vat per driver – this covers all seven events on the calendar and all entry fees etc (including the events at Magny-Cours and Barcelona).

CLICK HERE for more details including how to order the car and enter the championship.

Martin added: “It’s also the perfect opportunity for PMR to break onto the international circuit, as we’ve concentrated on UK based series since our inception in 2015.

“We’re impressed by the Clio Cup’s organisation and marketing potential, plus the support of the drivers with regards to media preparation and commercial acumen which gives them the knowledge to compete at the highest levels.”

Westbourne switches to new Clio Cup UK championship for 2020

Stalwart Clio Cup racing team Westbourne Motorsport has confirmed it will enter cars in the all new Clio Cup UK championship backed by Renault Sport Racing in 2020.

The West Sussex squad is set to order two latest fifth generation Clio Cup cars that will be used in the championship.

The Westbourne name has been synonymous with Clio Cup competition since 2011, having twice narrowly missed out on major titles.

Joint Team Principal Richard Colburn commented: “We will definitely be on the new Clio Cup UK grid in 2020 with at least two cars – maybe even more – and would be very interested in talking to prospective drivers.

“The price of the new Clio Cup car and the much lower entry fee make the championship very attractive.

“The opportunity for teams and drivers to race on both the Silverstone and Barcelona GP circuits is really exciting as is the chance to race with the French and Spanish championships.

“We enjoyed podium successes at both international races in 2019 and ended the season on another high with a 1-2-3 on the grid at Brands Hatch so we are confident that we have the experience and momentum to hit the ground running with the new Clio Cup UK car in 2020.”

The new Clio Cup UK race car is priced at £32,750* + vat.

A full season’s registration is just £8,050.00 + vat – this covers all seven events on the calendar and all entry fees etc (including the events at Magny-Cours and Barcelona).

Student Motorsport team to make debut in new Clio Cup UK championship

An ambitious venture, Student Motorsport, has chosen the new Clio Cup UK championship to make its debut as a motor racing team in 2020.

The team’s core will comprise experienced motor sport paddock figures under the leadership of ‘JP’ Latham, a professional race car technician and lecturer and also Founder of Student Motorsport.

Its aim is to support development of guest team members – namely motor sport students and recent graduates who will be offered the opportunity to gain vital experience in positions such as: mechanics; data engineers; tyre technicians; driver coaches; team operations and logistics; sponsorship, marketing and hospitality.

This week, Student Motorsport has placed an order for two latest fifth generation Clio Cup race cars that will be used in Clio Cup UK’s inaugural season next year.

“The organisers, Renault Sport Racing and R.S. Promotions, are making the championship really accessible – it’s a perfect starting point for us entering into our inaugural season in racing,” commented JP.

“We are building a strong on-line community of motor sport, automotive and engineering members with the aim of encouraging better networking, information and opportunities to gain relevant industry experience.

“During our racing activities – which will also takes us to two overseas events – the guest team members will be exposed to the real-life pressures of operating under racing conditions to learn and develop the skills needed for a career in the motor sport industry.

“Clio Cup UK is a perfect platform for achieving that and compliments motor sport education – the organisers of the championship are being really supportive of our project.”

Clio Cup UK has announced a seven event calendar for 2020 (CLICK HERE).

It will race five times alongside the British GT Championship and then at two more events overseas – Magny-Cours in France and Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain.

A full season’s registration is just £8,050.00 + vat. This covers all seven events and all entry fees etc (including the two events abroad).

JP, also formerly Team Manager at The College of West Anglia Motorsport, continued: “We already have one driver signed and will announce them soon – it would be great if our second driver could be someone young who is perhaps looking to graduate from karts to cars. We are very much open to dialogue with interested drivers and potential sponsors of our exciting venture.”

MRM planning minimum three-car entry in new Clio Cup UK championship

MRM, which won 2019’s Renault UK Clio Cup with Jack Young, has become the latest high profile team to commit to the all-new Clio Cup UK championship in 2020.

The Bristol based squad is looking to run at least three of the latest fifth generation Clio Cup race cars that will be used in the championship.

Clio Cup UK’s inaugural season in 2020 will consist of seven race weekends.

It will race five times alongside the British GT Championship and then at two more events overseas – Magny-Cours in France and Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain.

A full season’s registration is just £8,050.00 + vat. This covers all seven events and all entry fees etc (including the two events abroad).

MRM Team Principal Mike Ritchie commented: “After our title success of 2019 with Jack Young, we are keen to keep racing in Renault circles and the look and feel of the new Clio Cup UK is very attractive.

“The cars are affordable and the registration fee offers real value for money for drivers. The two events overseas are going to be a great experience for everyone on the grid – just over £8k for all seven events (14 races) including Magny-Cours and Barcelona doesn’t get much better for a driver.

“We won at both overseas events we did in 2019 at Paul Ricard and Hockenheim which were organised by Renault Sport Racing who are now involved with this new championship in the UK and that is another big draw.

“Ideally we’d like to run three cars and, although we are in talks with drivers, we’d be happy to hear from other interested parties – we could go to four or even five as we did at times in 2019.”

New Clio Cup UK will use the latest fifth generation Clio Cup race car priced £32,750.00 + vat (based on current £/€ exchange rates).

The car is powered by a 1.3 turbocharged engine producing 180bhp. Torque is put at 300Nm. Transmission is via a five-speed Sadev sequential (push-pull) gearbox.

Team Pyro ready to return to Clio Cup action with new UK championship

Multiple title-winning squad Team Pyro is set for a return to Renault racing in 2020 after confirming plans to enter cars in the all new Clio Cup UK championship.

Pyro has previously taken the likes of Ashley Sutton, Jack Goff and Mike Bushell to title success but in 2019 it took a sabbatical from UK competition.

Mark Hunt, Team Principal, commented: “The way the new Clio Cup UK championship is being done has lured us back – it’s really good.

“The costs have been slashed – £8k for seven events is not much more than a club level registration fee and that includes two events overseas.

“The price of the cars is lower than anything else out there in one-make ‘saloon’ racing with manufacturer support. They are brand new and Renault Sport never make a duff car – these will hold their value, just like Clios always have.

“I also like the fact it’s now with British GTs – it’s a really good scene and that makes it more inclusive in terms of the different levels of drivers it can appeal to.

“We have one driver already signed and are talking to a few others – the plan is to run three or four cars but we’re always happy to hear from people.”

New Clio Cup UK’s inaugural season in 2020 will consist of seven race weekends.

It will race five times alongside the British GT Championship and then at two more events overseas – Magny-Cours in France and Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain.

Amigo Motorsport planning entry in new Clio Cup UK championship

Amigo Motorsport has become the latest team to confirm plans to contest the all new Clio Cup UK championship in 2020.

The Essex outfit says the significantly reduced costs of the championship – now with support from Renault Sport Racing – plus a simplified new car as well as the chance to race overseas are amongst the biggest appeals.

“It’s been very well worked out – the cost is really good for something with this sort of profile,” commented Team Principal Rob Gaffney.

“We are actually talking with a driver from overseas and are open to running two cars or maybe even a third – even I’m tempted to get back behind the wheel!”

He added: “We really like the international aspect, particularly for the cost – to race at places like Magny-Cours and Barcelona against the French and Spanish teams as well as five more events alongside British GT all for around £8k is pretty cool.

“We also believe the spec of the car will appeal to more drivers – it’s back to a five-speed sequential (push-pull) gear system which is nicer.

“We raced in Clios a decade ago so know how good the cars from Renault Sport are… the new ‘Gen 5’ car that is coming is less daunting and that’s going to make for a more diverse grid.

“It’s kind of taking it back to racing in the Nineties when it was more for everyone and that’s another reason why we want to be involved.”

See elsewhere on this website for details on how to purchase the new Gen 5 Clio Cup UK race car, register for the championship and 2020 race dates/circuits.

New Clio Cup UK race car at Autosport International Show

The latest generation Clio Cup race car to be used in the new Clio Cup UK championship in 2020 will be on display at next week’s Autosport International Show at Birmingham NEC (9-12 January).

The car will be on the Student Motorsport team’s stand (no. 3220). This will be in Hall 3 located between the Formula E Feature and International Business Lounge (MIA).

Clio Cup UK personnel will be on hand to answer questions about the car and the championship.

A recent strengthening of the pound means the new Clio Cup car can currently be purchased for just over £32,000.00 + vat.

This marks a drastic reduction in price compared to the previous fourth generation car as does a full season’s registration to the championship.

This is now only £8,050.00 + vat and covers all seven events on the 2020 Clio Cup UK calendar – five with the British GT Championship and two more overseas, at Magny-Cours in France and Barcelona in Spain (see Calendar).

CLICK HERE for more details on how to enquire about/purchase the car and register for the championship.

Meanwhile, Student Motorsport is one of seven teams to have so far announced plans to be on the new Clio Cup UK grid in 2020.

Others include Assetto Motorsport, Power Maxed Racing, Westbourne Motorsport, MRM Racing and Team Pyro.

Ben Wallace first driver to confirm place on new Clio Cup UK grid

Ben Wallace first driver to confirm place on new Clio Cup UK grid

                        Posted on: 29/01/2020

Ben Wallace has become the first driver to confirm his participation in Renault Sport Racing’s new Clio Cup UK championship.

Ben, aged 20 from Southport, Lancashire will race for new team Student Motorsport.

He has several seasons’ car racing experience, in the VW Racing Cup and British GT Championship.

Ben commented: “The new Clio Cup is a really exciting looking championship for UK motor sport and I was immediately interested when it was first announced, especially being on the SRO British GT package.

“I’ve worked with John Paul Latham (Student Motorsport Team Manager) before and he was also very keen to do it so the deal came about pretty quickly!

“The costs are right, the format is right and the car is so well thought through – it’s going to appeal to drivers of all ages and abilities.

“The track record of the people running the championship also makes me confident that nobody will have a performance advantage – it will be 100% down to the teams and drivers and that’s a challenge I relish.”

Clio Cup UK will use the all-new ‘fifth generation’ Clio Cup race car. Student Motorsport has already ordered two of the cars and that number could rise further.

John Paul Latham added: “We’re thrilled to have Ben on board – aside from the focus on winning races, we can utilise his experience to help our other drivers and, with our team personnel, inspire the next generation of motor sport professionals.

“When we considered taking Student Motorsport racing, Clio Cup UK stood out as the place to start: the championship is so well supported, professionally run and exposed to a wide-ranging audience which is key to supporting our partners.”

Clio Cup UK gets under way in mid-May with the first of its seven race weekends in 2020 – these will include five with the British GT Championship and two more overseas (Magny-Cours, France and Barcelona, Spain).

Famous Castrol name joins 2020 Clio Cup UK grid

Castrol will have a significant presence on all cars in the new Clio Cup UK championship in 2020.

The oil, fluid and lubricant brand’s famous name will appear on the car’s windscreen strips, mirrors and front and rear corners in line with a new five-year partnership with Renault’s customer racing activities.

Renault Sport Racing’s Clio Cup France, Italia and Spain race championships, Clio Trophy France (rally) and Formula Renault Eurocup single-seater category will be similarly affected.

This long-term technical and commercial collaboration will give all Renault Sport Racing customer racing activities access to Castrol’s unique expertise, cutting-edge technologies and high-performance lubricants.

Castrol logos will appear on the communication platforms of the different categories, the Renault Sport Racing staff kits as well as the competing cars and driver and crew racing suits.

On a wider scale, this agreement reflects Groupe Renault’s global strategy, whose partnership with Castrol has been significantly strengthened since the first collaboration in Formula 1 in 2017.

As the official lubricant supplier of the Enstone technical centre and Viry-Châtillon engine operations base, Castrol also supports Renault F1 Team on-track activities.

Castrol and Renault Sport Racing formalised this agreement linked to customer racing during an event held on 27 January at the Atelier Renault on the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

Cyril Abiteboul, Renault Sport Racing Managing Director, commented: “We are extremely happy to begin a new chapter of our relationship with Castrol.

“Castrol is an industry leader in its field with a rich heritage in motor racing and feeder series. A partnership of this scale and length underlines the desire to write a common history just as New Clio is about to take on the stage.

“It also shows the attractiveness of our customer racing activities in the eyes of major players in the sport and the industry.

“We are proud to be able to count on a partner of such renown and expertise and we look forward to seeing our teams take up the challenges and explore the opportunities arising.”

Ben Russell, Castrol Senior Global Account Director, said: "We are delighted to be building on our strategic partnership with Renault and extending it further with the Customer Racing Series.

“Renault Customer Racing allows us to showcase the performance and capabilities of standard production technology of both Castrol lubricants and Renault vehicles.

“We’re offering the high performance lubricant technology we use today, in Renault Sport Racing to Groupe Renault’s customers, through our aftersales’ service fill partnership, and a jointly branded range of exclusive lubricant products available across Renault’s dealerships. We look forward to an exciting future together.”

Clio Cup UK’s teams & drivers to race at French F1 Grand Prix

Teams and drivers competing in 2020’s new Clio Cup UK championship will get to contest a special two-race event in front of Formula 1’s crowds at this June’s French Grand Prix.

Those making the journey to the famous Paul Ricard ‘Le Castellet’ circuit near Marseille (26-28 June) will take part in the international ‘Clio Cup Open’ alongside counterparts from Renault Sport Racing’s other Clio Cup championships.

Privileged partners of the French Grand Prix since its return to the FIA Formula 1 World Championship, Groupe Renault and Renault Sport Racing have renewed their support towards one of the year’s biggest sporting events in France.

Benoit Nogier, Commercial Racing Director, Renault Sport Racing Customer Racing, commented: “Following the indisputable success we had in 2019, when nearly 50 competitors competed on the track, it was logical for Renault to repeat the operation in 2020.

“This Clio Cup Open is a reminder of Renault’s motor racing versatility in bringing together the Clio Cup and Formula 1 at the same event.”

Éric Boullier, Managing Director, GIP Grand Prix de France-Le Castellet, added: “Groupe Renault has been an important partner of the Formula 1 French Grand Prix since its return in 2018. We share the same philosophy about competition, and we look forward to seeing all these drivers compete in intense battles.

“We are sure the spectators will love this fantastic show on the Circuit Paul Ricard track.”

Whilst a non-championship event, the Clio Cup Open gives teams, drivers and their sponsors an exciting opportunity to appear in front of the F1 crowds. On top of the two races, free practice and qualifying sessions will add up to plenty of track time around Paul Ricard’s impressive 5.8km configuration.

A similar ‘Open’ event was held at 2019’s French GP – both races were won by UK team MRM and its driver Jack Young. Fellow UK team Westbourne Motorsport and driver Ben Colburn also achieved a podium result.

MRM and Westbourne are among the seven teams to have so far announced their participation in 2020’s Clio Cup UK, along with Amigo Motorsport, Assetto Motorsport, Power Maxed Racing, Student Motorsport and Team Pyro.

Meanwhile, the latest £/€ exchange rate means the price of the latest fifth generation Clio Cup car – to be raced in Clio Cup UK in 2020 – has decreased further to just £31,560.00 (+vat).

A full season’s registration for drivers is also considerably less than in previous years at just £8,050.00 (+vat).

This covers all seven championship events including two overseas – at Magny-Cours, France and Barcelona, Spain. CLICK HERE for 2020’s Clio Cup UK race dates (not including the Paul Ricard/French F1 Grand Prix weekend).

UK drivers will have a newly built Clio Cup 5 – fresh from the production line – to share.
